Cricket Matches are Shrinking! T20

Test Matches need extraordinary concentration from the Batsman; test his skills, patience, and shot selection. Batsmen is defensive most of the time, while Bowler sets a tight field, half-a-dozen slips, silly-point, forward short leg and attacks the batsman. Bowler has to plan his wicket, often five-six overs he may have to dupe the batsman into believing this is his line and length, before bowling that magic delivery to take his wicket. It requires just 10 deliveries for the bowling side to pack the team back into pavilion; but in reality takes several days to send them back. Often matches end in draw without hurting the egos of the playing teams. Whites, and the red cricket ball, dream of several aspiring young Cricketer. Match in Lords is like Mecca for Cricketers.

One-day Matches came with an attractive proposition. Match finishes in a day. Results are assured; very rarely matches end-up in a tie. And lot of action is promised. Batsmen start aggressive in the first 15 overs; field restrictions help them to provide all the action, then the game slows down a bit, consolidation phase and finally the last 10 overs; what was later known to be called as Slog Overs finishes a game in a style. And then comes the chase. Pitches are often prepared for high scoring matches; but Bowlers can still plot, plan and pick-up their wickets. If not for five overs, the plan often lasts for 5 balls too. Wasim Akram, Anil Kumble, and Muralitharan, plan their over and often take their wickets in the 5th or 6th ball making the batsman go through a series of fake balls. One day matches are enterprising. Lot of sponsors, often matches are played on holidays or at least day-night matches. You can come after the work and go through the final moments crossing mid-night. But still it was better as you don't have to take the whole week off. Beers, drums, dances and flamboyant commentaries.

T20 - Twenty-Twenty is here. Half-a-day matches - so no need to even take that one-day off. Come after your office hours, enjoy your drink and the match. About three and half hours of match, 20 overs each, a no-ball entitles the batsman to go for a free hit, 6 overs field restrictions and whats more - a pitch that no bowler would ever love to bowl. Its all batsman's game now.

Chris Gayle, yesterday, came with his willow, whacked the likes of Shaun Pollock all over the ground, 10 sixes, massive for even a one-dayer, and a century made in just under 50 balls.

Harsha Bhogle said: Its a poor shot. The ball didn't touch the golf course, when Chris Gayle, flicked the ball for a six, which went out of the Ground.

Tony Cozier said: Graeme Smith is placing his fielders all over, he needs to put couple of them outside the boundary rope or may be even outside the ground.

And That's Twent Twenty Cricket. A Batsmen Game, fun, shorter version meeting the needs of a increasingly faster world, lot of sponsorship and fully packed stadium. And now, you may not get to see a sleeping fan just because Gavaskars will not take 50 balls to reach 100 from 90
